St Boniface Basilica, Winnipeg Manitoba.

The dramatic facade is all that is left of the original St. Boniface Cathedral-Basilica which was destroyed by fire in 1968. It's cemetery includes the graves of many important Manitoba figures, including Louis Riel.

It's cool to see recognisable pictures on the web. This is a great shot. If you ever go there again, you should take some pictures of the inside. It's amazing!

:) I always enjoy seeing photos of close to home too. I'm hoping to do alot more exploring of Winnipeg this summer, focusing on places I've not been. The inside of the Basilica is on the list :D

very impressive structure, i'm surprised they would not rebuild?
although if they would remove this one to do it , i'm happy they have not.
even the road has great character.
well done.

It's actually been rebuilt a couple of times. The original structure (1818) was wooden, that was torn down and rebuilt (1862), then there was a fire and and it was rebuilt again in 1906, this time in stone. The fire that destroyed most of it happened in 1968, so in 1972 they left the stone facade in place, and built directly behind it so they could keep some of the original splendor intact. :)
